2024 DUNHUANG CUP Regulation

Purpose of the Event

Based on the principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency, the competition aims to discover and promote outstanding Chinese traditional chamber music and ensemble works with cultural and artistic aesthetic value, as well as innovative spirit suitable for global artistic promotion. It encourages and promotes various types of orchestral organizations that actively advocate and express local Chinese instrumental music arts.

 

·Eligibility for Participation in the Overseas Division

1. Foreign Nationals: Individuals with citizenship other than the People's Republic of China.

2. Permanent Residents (PR): Individuals holding permanent residency rights in countries and regions other than the People's Republic of China, with PR visa types.

3. Temporary Residents (TR): Individuals holding temporary residency rights in countries and regions other than the People's Republic of China, with TR visa types (excluding tourism visas for 1 year or within 1 year), including study visas, work visas, etc.

 

Special Notes:

1) Participants with any of the above A, B, C identities can individually register for either the competition in the Mainland China division or the Overseas division, or simultaneously register for both.

2) For teams registering in the Overseas division, at least 2/3 of the members must possess any of the above A, B, C identities.

Competition Categories

Categories or Forms of Competition:

Ensemble Requirements: The participating works must be polyphonic compositions, meaning they should consist of two or more parts (including two parts). Works and forms involving ensemble playing or playing in unison are not within the scope of this competition. It is permissible to include a moderate amount of Western instruments such as cello, double bass, vibraphone, tremolo, and glockenspiel, but the number of these instruments should not exceed one-third of the total number of musicians in the ensemble

• Chinese Traditional Instrument Ensemble Category

1. Solo Instrumental Ensemble Forms (e.g., Guzheng Ensemble, Pipa Ensemble, Dizi Ensemble, Erhu Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, etc.) 

2. Similar Instrument Group Ensemble (e.g., Plucked Instrument Group Ensemble, Bowed String Instrument Group Ensemble, Wind Instrument Group Ensemble, Percussion Instrument Group Ensemble, etc.)

3. Comprehensive Ensemble, Ensemble, and Chamber Music Forms of Different Instruments and Instrument Groups (including Chinese regional music genres)

• Cross-disciplinary and Diverse Styles of traditional Instrument Ensembles:

1. Chinese traditional instrument ensembles should account for no less than half of the ensemble, and they can be mixed with vocal, Western instruments, electronic instruments, and other forms

 

All performances and accompaniments in all categories must ensure that there is absolutely no infringement on any third-party intellectual property rights or other related rights. If any infringement occurs as a result, and any individual or collective suffers economic or mental losses, the responsibility shall lie solely with the submitter of the work, and the organising committee and the host organization shall not be held responsible.

 

Compertition Group

A.  Automatically Grouping by Registration Scale:

1. Small Ensemble (3 - 9 persons)

2. Medium Ensemble (10 - 25 persons)

 

 

B. Competition Grouping

1. Non-Professional Group

Primary School Group (2/3 of members are in grades 1-6)

Secondary School Group (2/3 of members are in grades 7-12)

Youth Group (2/3 of members are aged 18-40)

Public Group (2/3 of members are aged 41 and above)

 

2. Professional Group

Youth Group (2/3 of members are under 18)

Adult Group (2/3 of members are 18 and above)

 

Special Note:

Professional students who are studying or have graduated from music colleges around the world, and have graduated for more than 5 years, can choose to register in the professional group or the non-professional group. Professional students who have graduated within 5 years are not allowed to register in the non-professional group.

 

 

Explanation of Competition Format and Procedures

 

The overseas division competition is divided into two stages: the qualification review stage and the final stage. In the qualification review stage, participants are required to submit proof of identity and a brief introduction of their repertoire via email (the repertoire introduction can be in written form or in the form of video clips of repertoire excerpts).

 

Duration of performances in the final stage: For the professional group, not exceeding 10 minutes; for the non-professional group, not exceeding 8 minutes. Performances should cover the entire repertoire.

 

All participating groups are required to select and register one repertoire, which is self-selected. The entire repertoire must be performed in the final.

 

The name of participating ensembles (groups) in this overseas division competition must remain consistent from the qualification review to the final (awards and promotion lists will be based on this). Once enrolled, the name cannot be changed. It is recommended to name the ensemble using the name of the institution or unit followed by the band's name (e.g., XX Country (or City) XXX Chamber Music Ensemble, XXX Country (or City) XXX Orchestra, XXXX Academy XXX Orchestra).

 

The number of participants in the qualification review and final cannot change by more than 2 people.

 

The repertoire selected by the participating teams should be elegant in style and innovative in content, showcasing the artistic expression of chamber music and ensemble performances as much as possible.

 

 

Registration and Qualification Review

April 20th to June 15th: Online registration is available. Please log in and stay updated on the Overseas Division competition website: www.dunhuang.au.

Please have the team leader handle the registration uniformly, and individual registrations from team members will not be accepted.

Qualification Review Fee: AUD 10 per person

On June 18, 2024, the qualification review results will be published on the official website of the Overseas Division at www.dunhuang.com.au. Qualified teams can complete the confirmation of participation in the finals online. Players from outside Australia and New Zealand are responsible for handling visa applications and other matters themselves. The organizing committee will not notify teams that did not pass the qualification review, and the submitted materials and review fees will not be refunded.

 

 

The Final

The finals of the Overseas Division will be held offline in Melbourne, Australia from July 24th to 30th, 2024. (For teams unable to participate offline in the finals, video submissions are accepted, and the entire finals will be live-streamed on YouTube).

Final Enrolment Fee: AUD 138 per person.

From June 18th to 20th, 2024, participating teams will complete the procedures to confirm their participation in the finals. The organizing committee will simultaneously notify the teams of specific transportation, accommodation references, and instrument preparation requirements for the finals.

Promotion period for the finals: Teams participating in the finals can shoot videos, pictures, articles such as orchestra stories, rehearsal highlights, member interviews (close-ups), or self-made promotional videos and submit them to the organizing committee during the preparation period for the finals. After editing and organizing by the official website of the competition, they will be gradually published on various platforms, combined with the competition works, to maximize the promotion and publicity for the orchestras. (Participation in orchestra promotion is voluntary, with no additional cost, and does not affect the judging results).

The organizing committee will provide commonly used tuning for the guzheng, yangqin, piano, and large percussion instruments during the finals. Participants are required to bring their own instruments for other instruments, and practice instruments will not be provided.

 

 

Prize Categories

1. Participating orchestras (ensembles) in the finals will be scored based on the competition works and factors such as age, and will be grouped accordingly. An average score of 95 points or above will be awarded the Gold Prize, 90-94.9 points will be awarded the Silver Prize, 85-89.9 points will be awarded the Bronze Prize, and other scores will be awarded the Excellent Performance Award.

2. The organizing committee will establish the "Outstanding Guidance Teacher Award".

3. Prizes：

*Teams winning the gold, silver, and bronze awards in each category will receive trophies and award certificates.

*Teams entering the finals but not winning the gold, silver, or bronze awards will receive certificates of Outstanding Performance.

 

Notes & Attention:

1. Once registered for the competition, all participants are deemed to accept this regulation. Therefore, all participants must abide by the rules of this competition.

2. The organizing committee possesses the broadcasting and television broadcasting rights of audio-visual products of this event, as well as the rights to use, publish, and distribute audio-visual products within the scope of performances. Award-winning teams are obliged to participate in public welfare performances or

3. Participants are responsible for the accuracy of the repertoire they submit. Scores will not be counted for repertoire that does not match the registered repertoire. The organising committee is not responsible for verifying the repertoire of registered groups. If there are discrepancies between the repertoire performed and the requirements of the regulation, the judges have the right to terminate the competition for that participant, and all consequences shall be borne by the participant. All participants and parents should abide by the competition rules, respect the work arrangements of the organising committee, and accept the judgment results of the judging committee. If there are any objections to certain issues that arise during the competition, please report them to the supervisory committee. The organising committee reserves the right to cancel the participation qualification of those who disrupt the competition without reason. Groups or members who have enrolled but withdraw from the competition due to individual reasons will not be refunded the judging fee.

4. In the event of force majeure leading to the cancellation or postponement of the event, the organizing committee will announce relevant information on the official website.
